Auckland - the City of Sails

 Buenos dias amigos!

If you've been watching the news lately, you'll know that after more than 100 days, NZ once again has COVID in the community.  The cases are here in Auckland where we've been staying for the past few weeks which sadly means we are back in lockdown. BUGGER!

Prior to this latest bump in the road, we've had fun exploring this city.  Located on the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland is a harbor city which is fanatical about boating and sailing.  This small "Big City" has upscale shopping, a plethora of restaurants and plenty of tourist attractions.

Westhaven Marina holds 2000 boats making it the largest marina in the southern hemisphere

The Auckland War Memorial museum tells the story of NZ, its place in the Pacific and its peoples.

Auckland is best described in this picture.  Old being restored with a backdrop of new and modern.

The old Customs House now serves as an upscale retail shopping complex

Auckland's second nickname is city of cranes due to all of the construction underway in this growing metropolis. On any given day, you can spot as many as 12 different cranes in the skyline.  Some of the construction is in preparation for the great America's Cup Race due to be sailed in March of 2021.  We've had the good fortune to watch both the US and NZ teams go out to practice in their multi-million dollar racing sailboats.  While we aren't sailing aficionados, it is hard not to be caught up in the excitement of it all.  These vessels are built with hydroplanes which allow them to sail/fly through the water faster than traditionally built sailboats.

Top speed for this boat is 47.2 knots.  Price tag = $8 to $10 million

We are currently living in an apartment on the harbor with terrific views of all the activity.  We are told that during the actual race, the place we are renting with cost as much as $1000 per night!  Needless to say, we won't be staying here.   BUT if we are still in NZ, you can bet we will participate in the festivities.

In just 30 days we should know whether our visitor visa in NZ will be extended due to COVID or if our grand world adventure has to end for now.  We are enjoying each day as it comes and remain grateful for the hospitality this country has given us.

Stay Safe and Be Kind

  2. Jill shared your blog information. Sounds and looKs like you are having a great time. Lucky to be in New Zealand during these crazy times. We are doing fine, plenty of freedom if you stay in Clay County and use some common sense.

    Have a great time.

So nice to hear from you! Hope you are enjoying your retirement. Have you been able to do any fishing? We are thankful to be healthy and safe but will be very glad when COVID is a distant memory!
