The Next Chapter

We selected the name Untethered for our blog because it seems the perfect word to describe the next chapter in our lives.  We've been planning our living around the globe adventure for quite some time and have been executing our strategy over the past several weeks. 

We've sold the house along with all of furniture, artwork and normal household belongings.  For the month of May, we are living in a lovely and nicely appointed two bedroom home found on VRBO located in Ponte Vedra, Florida.  It is just a few miles from our beach home but is a wonderful place to begin the transition of living with less.  The Sawgrass Community is a lovely area, landscaped to perfection with a nice blend of Florida wilderness sprinkled throughout the 2800 acre community.  It offers all the amenities of golf, tennis, swimming pools plus has an amazing beach.  In addition, the wildlife is everywhere including at least 50 species of birds.  Below is a new sighting for us.  It is a black-bellied whistling duck, one of the few species that likes to hang out in trees.  Of course, we were thrilled to have a new sighting to add to our birding list! 

In addition to moving, Cheryl's last day at work was last Friday.  So we are both officially retired!  Home sold✔

Greetings! We are fast approaching our final few weeks here on the South Island of NZ.  We spent several days in the famous Marlborough Sounds known for it's beautiful waterways.  Sailing, fishing, kayaking and tramping are just a few of the things to keep one busy.  The area's history includes a massive whaling industry that nearly decimated several species of whales.  Thankfully for the whales, we no longer chase them to kill but rather to study & admire them.  We took a boat tour skippered by a 6th generation local who spoke proudly about the perseverance of these whaling families.  Most have seen hard times more than once and yet they persist in living in this very remote corner of the world.  Now employment mostly revolves around tourism.  With international tourists gone due to Covid, tough times are back. Back in the USA

 Hi Friends! This blog is much delayed because I've turned into a slug!  Seriously, it's been a busy 30 days since I last posted.  We celebrated Christmas and New Years in Auckland taking in the festivities and enjoying our last few weeks in New Zealand.  Since the holidays fall during the school summer break, many families depart the city and head out to the beaches or go camping.  So Auckland wasn't too crowded which made finding a lovely spot for Christmas and New Year's Eve dinners very easy! Celebrating Christmas Day with our good friends Chris & Keiko New Zealanders have simple but beautiful decorations.  The Auckland Harbor Bridge in celebration of the New Year! Hippies, Hops & a Spit

 Hello friends & family! We hope this note finds you doing well.  Our journey continues on the NW/Central side of the South Island.  We are in the region known as the Abel Tasman/Marlborough Region.  Regions are the equivalent of our states in the US.  The states are further divided into districts similar to our counties.  The Abel Tasman National park hosts one of NZ's "Great Walks" These "walks" are 4-5 day tramping trails considered to be a "must do" by any serious tramper.  Prior to hitting the trail, supplies can be secured in Takaka, a funky town filled with hippies, backpackers and freedom campers.  NZ seems to have a love/hate relationship with freedom campers.  These are folks who camp for free in any spot that allows it.  For years, many kiwis did their own share of freedom camping but now the locals seem to have grown tired of the constant challenges of trash and human waste left behind.  Perhaps years ago, the number...
